  • Avoriaz - How it all began...

Avoriaz is situated 600m above Morzine and began as a place where a few villagers had summer homes next to a high mountain pasture.  Avoriaz is a purpose built resort that has developed over time.  For more information on the early days in the Morzine area, click here.

The idea of building Avoriaz began in the 1960's.  Jean Vuarnet, Olympic gold medalists  who had lived in Morzine most his life, was chosen to direct the new ski resort.  His dream for Avoriaz was a "little Savoyard Colorado."   Avoriaz is a charming resort with alpine chalets unlike other large, super structure, purpose built
resorts being built around France at the time.

Shortly after the construction of Avoriaz began, Vuarnet and some fellow ski enthusiasts thought up a plan for skiing without borders.  Vuarnet's dream came to fruition in 1966 and is now the Portes du Soleil.
